Synopsis:

Alien Encounters examines the role of the alien in our culture, as depicted in science fiction magazines and book cover art from the last 75 years. Working primarily from the collection of Jane and Howard Frank, Brooks Peck and I selected 33 original works that show a range of artistic alien visions - aliens as friends, enemies, as humanoid, and as utterly inhuman.

A secondary theme of this exhibition is to emphasize that these works of art are in fact commercial art - they were commissioned by magazine and book publishers and so artists were required to include certain imagery and to leave adequate space for titles and advertising copy. We included several flip-type interactives and original book covers to illustrate this point.

Exhibition Art/Design Details:
The wall murals were created from classic sci-fi imagery and traced / painted onto the walls using an overhead projector. The object citations were printed directly onto a four by eight foot sheet of 1/4" grey sintra (a sheet plastic), which was then cut into individual pieces. The greyscale color-scheme of the walls and murals was implemented to allow the artworks themselves to further catch the eye.
