Synopsis:

Jimi Hendrix: An Evolution of Sound explores the musician's evolving musicianship and sound from his youth in Seattle, his time in Nashville and on the "chitlin' circuit", his musical schooling in Greenwich Village at the height of folk and blues revival, and his rise to superstardom with the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys.

The exhibition features recurring storylines that cover each period of his musical career, illustrated by select iconic objects, photographs and text.

One major goal for the exhibition space was to create a place where visitors could hang out and either actively experience the exhibition, or passively soak in the Hendrix vibes. A lounge area was created with iPod access to the Hendrix audio catalog, access to books related to the artist, and in full view of a 1.5 hour looping sequence of Hendrix concert footage, from 1966 - 1969, illustrating Hendrix's growth as an artist. The audio from this video also provides the only ambient audio in the gallery.

In addition to the lounge area, there is an interactive area where the visitor can mix classic Hendrix tracks along to a walkthrough narrative, and an additional interactive dedicated to the basics of guitar effects pedal technology. Both of these interactives illustrate ways in which Hendrix was innovative in addition to his guitar playing.

Finally, there is a large-scale "life map" timeline which focuses on those events, people, and places, which influenced his sound the most. Designed by Belle & Wissell, the life map incorporates 3-D artifacts, video, and audio into the traditional 2-D timeline structure.
