I designed the logo for the exhibition Bob Dylan's American Journey: 1956 - 1966, curated by Jasen Emmons, which debuted at Experience Music Project, Seattle, WA, November 20, 2004 - September 5, 2005.

Given Dylan's legacy as an American folk music hero, I wanted to reference that with the type design, imagery, and color palette. I forget which typeface I used for the title type, but as for process, I picked a seriffed font, printed out the title text onto a sheet of paper, and then used a photocopier to repeatedly shrink and enlarge the type until a pleasing amount of degradation and grit appeared. Then I scanned in the type at 600ppi and 6" high, digitally cut out each of the letters, contrasted them out, saved them as bitmapped tiffs and then placed them in Adobe Illustrator, adjusting the letters by hand as needed to give a subtle handmade feel.

The first 4 images are design comps for the exhibition poster and the remaining images show the logo as used at EMP, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, and the Skirball in LA.
